Vehicle Crime Prevention Tips - Rochester Police Department

The Rochester Police Department (RPD) recommends the following precautions:

  • Park in a well-lighted area
  • Close all windows and lock all doors
  • Activate any theft deterrent device you may have
  • Put packages or valuables out of sight: GPS and cell phone accessories, stereo equipment and other expensive items in full view invite theft.
  • If you park in a commercial lot or garage, leave only the ignition key with the attendant.
  • Do not keep your license, registration or title in the car. Thieves can use these documents to sell your car if stolen or impersonate you when challenged by police. Owners who indiscriminately leave keys, registrations and other identifiable material in their vehicles may return home only to find that they have been the victims of a burglary.
  • Park your vehicle in the garage if you have one and lock both the vehicle and garage door.

Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli encourages citizens to contact an area Neighborhood Service Center (NSC) for additional crime prevention tips.
