Mayor Evans provides update on City’s winter weather operations

The City of Rochester’s snow-clearing operations are underway and will continue as the forecast calls for more snowfall this week.

Mayor Malik D. Evans today urged motorists to drive cautiously, give plows plenty of space, and follow posted alternate-side parking regulations to ensure that streets can be effectively cleared.

Mayor Evans outlined the City’s winter weather operations and citizen responsibilities to help ensure safe travel for everyone throughout the season.

  • City crews plow major and minor arterial streets. Contractors plow residential streets.
  • Streets are plowed when snow accumulations reach 3 inches.
  • To control ice, salt is applied on main arterial streets and on some secondary roadways that have special features (e.g., streets with schools, bus routes, bridges, hills, etc.)
  • Generally, salt is not applied to residential streets.
  • Sidewalks are plowed when 4 inches of new snow has accumulated. Property owners are responsible to remove any remaining snow and ice.
  • Snow plow operations can be tracked in real time using PlowTrax, available at: www.cityofrochester.gov/plowtrax/.
  • Property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks adjacent to their property clear of snow and ice.
  • Shoveling or plowing snow from private property onto sidewalks, roads or fire hydrants is illegal.
  • Check on neighbors who may be home bound and offer to shovel their sidewalk or walkway.
