Dialogue between youth and justice system continues with 7th year of J.U.S.T. L.A.W.

J.U.S.T. L.A.W. has kicked off its seventh year as an initiative designed to educate city students about the criminal justice system and provide those who administer the law an understanding of youth perspectives. 

Nearly 2,000 students from 23 Rochester City School District schools will have the opportunity to engage with judges from the New York State Court 7th Judicial District. This outreach represents the first part of the program’s name—J.U.S.T. (Justice, Understanding and Societal Trust).

City to Notify Customers with Lead Water Service Lines - Lead Water Service Line Inventory Completed

Mayor Malik D. Evans announced today that the City Water Bureau has submitted its Lead Water Service Line Inventory to the N.Y. State Department of Health, meeting the first major milestone of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s lead in drinking water regulations. In conjunction with the submission, the City will begin notifying all customers with service lines that have been identified as containing lead, or unknown material. The letters include helpful information residents can use to identify when their street is scheduled to have its lead service lines replaced.

City issues RFP for development on East Main and Laura Streets

The City of Rochester has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking innovative and community-focused development plans for an approximately two-acre site consisting of up to 12 parcels located at East Main and Laura Streets. This initiative offers a rare opportunity for developers to creatively transform a strategic urban corridor in Rochester’s Southeast Quadrant, providing benefits to residents and businesses alike. 

City gratified by favorable resolution of SEC litigation

The City of Rochester has received a favorable resolution with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), bringing litigation against the City and its former finance director to a close.

The litigation arose out of 2019 revelations that the Rochester City School District (RCSD) had exceeded its budget for the prior fiscal year. The settlement, endorsed today by Chief U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford, requires no monetary payment and no monitorship. The City and its former finance director have agreed to forward-looking injunctions only.

Urban League to discuss college applications for Black scholars at Oct. 17 Thursday Thinkers forum

Representatives from the Urban League of Rochester’s Black Scholars Program will offer a presentation on the college application process at this week’s Thursday Thinkers: Insights into Rochester discussion forum from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rochester Community Sports Complex, 460 Oak St.

Taureean Uthman, the Urban League’s vice president of Vice President of Youth Education and Development, will lead the conversation on the challenges and opportunities for Black scholars in this process.
